I’ve been facing inward somewhat, lately, so it hurts a bit at the end of the day to look at some of the photos I took of the kids this weekend. I see the boys, living loud as they usually do, resilient to being ignored from time to time and obviously overlooking my inconsistencies as a parent.
They stretch so far! Infinity is a new favorite word with Ford. On a 6×6 yellow card, I write a note to him, late at night: a just-love card, with a footnote of grief. I could always respond better, be more consistent, listen every time. That I don’t, I think he forgives. I stare at this picture, listening to the sleepy sounds of the house at night, hoping that he always understands the infinity of my love or him.
how beautiful.we are all imperfect in life, especially as mothers, but knowing this and waking each day doing your very best stretching your love will no doubt leave a beautiful imprint on your boys.

(i used to get very uncomfortable when my parents apologized to me for something more than trivial-every-day-dinner-sucks type things. i still do.)
beautiful photo. beautiful sentiment. i have to look at it this way. when i have those not-so-perfect parenting days and then acknowledge it at the end of the day by trying to make amends, i’m teaching my little boys that it’s ok to make mistakes. we make mistakes big and small, but we apologise, move on, accept one another as we are and continue to love.

it’s funny. He read the note today, and looked up at me and said, “I love your note, mommy. That was really nice. But, I don’t remember feeling bad yesterday.”
